Kansas Coaching Changes for 2021

Class 6A

  • Blue Valley North – Adam Pummill
    Pummill, a BV North assistant, replaces Andy Sims who took the head coaching position at Park Hill (Mo.). Pummill was the offensive coordinator for BVN and has served as a head coach in his past.
     
  • Dodge City – Glenn O’Neil

O’Neil left his position at Topeka Seaman to take over for Dave Foster. Foster departed to take the head coaching position at Alva (Okla.). O’Neil won six state championships, one in football and five in boys’ basketball at Scott City.
 

  • Gardner-Edgerton – Jesse Owen

Owen is a former head coach at Olathe East and takes over the Trailblazers after Ryan Cornelsen left to become the head coach at Republic (Mo.).
 

  • KC Harmon – Pat Hansen
    Hansen replaces Steven Jackson at Harmon after coaching recently at William Jewell (D2) and Schlagle, where he was named head coach in 2018.
     
  • Lawrence – Clint Bowen
    Bowen is the former Defensive Coordinator at KU. He replaces Steve Rampy who took the head coaching position at Staley (Mo.) High School.
     
  • Shawnee Mission South – Nick Foster

Foster replaces Brett Oberzan and comes to SM South from as assistant role at Mill Valley.
 

  • Wichita Southeast – Marcus Bagley
    Bagley takes over the Southeast program from Taylor Counts, who is now an assistant at Andover.

 


Class 5A

  • Emporia – Keaton Tuttle
    Tuttle took over the program as interim last fall when Emporia parted ways with Corby Milleson.
     
  • KC Schlagle – Cernyn Macon

Macon takes over for Taylor Wallace, Jr. who took over the Stallions in 2019. Macon has coached at various stops in the K.C. area, including a recent stint at Schlagle’s offensive coordinator. Macon was supposed to be K.C. Washington’s head coach in 2020 before the year was cancelled because of COVID-19.
 

  • KC Turner – Rick Byers

Byers takes over at Turner for Stephan Franklin after spending a season on staff at Blue Valley North. Prior, Byers was a long-time head coach at St. Pius X (Mo.).  
 

  • Topeka Highland Park – Jermaine Monroe, Sr.
    Highland Park will look to former Maur Hill-Mount Academy coach Jermaine Monroe, Sr. to take over for Mike Foristiere.  
     
  • Topeka Seaman – Jared Swafford
    Swafford takes over at Seaman after Glenn O’Neil’s departure to Dodge City. Swafford is the former Defensive Coordinator at 3A contender Perry-Lecompton.   
     

Class 4A

  • Ottawa – Walt Alexander

Former Topeka High head coach Walt Alexander replaces Rob Hedrick at Ottawa after spending last season as an assistant at William Chrisman (Mo.). Alexander has turned around several programs in a long career, including Topeka and Hill City.
 

  • Ulysses – Nick Fawcett
    Fawcett takes over the helm of the Tigers from Rick Cue. Fawcett comes to Ulysses from Saint Francis after leading the Indians to consecutive eight-man state runner-up finishes.

 

  • Winfield – Monty Lewis
    Lewis returns to Kansas after time at Holdenville (Okla.). He takes over the Vikings after Linn Hibbs announced his retirement. Lewis is a longtime coach at Southwestern and Friends.


Class 3A

  • Anderson County – Luke Catloth

Logan Pegram left Anderson County after two seasons to become an assistant at Lawrence Free State. Former Pitt State player and Olathe North graduate Luke Catloth takes over the Bulldog program this fall.

  • Baldwin – Bob Lisher

Former Lawrence Free State coach Bob Lisher takes over at Baldwin after David Bowen left to take the job at Jefferson West. Lisher coached Free State from its inception until he retired in 2018 after 37 years, 22 at FS. 

  • Baxter Springs – Russell Burr

Russell Burr is the new coach at Baxter Springs after Matt Mims held the position for only one season.

  • Cherryvale – Robert Henderson

Robert Henderson takes over at Cherryvale for Travis Young. After several seasons on staff at Pittsburg State, Young spent one season with the Chargers before taking a position at Coffeyville Community College.

  • Clearwater – Jimmy McDowell

Jimmy McDowell will lead the Clearwater program after Jeremy Scheufler left to become the athletic director and assistant principal at Haysville Campus. 

  • Goodland – Jordan Moshier

Moshier comes to Goodland from Chaparral where he spent the last two seasons as head coach. He led the Roadrunners to a 6-11 record during his two seasons.

  • Hugoton – Jay Witt

Witt comes to Hugoton from Texas and takes over for Nick O’Loughlin who left the Eagles for a position in Colorado.

  • Jefferson West – David Bowen

David Bowen departed Baldwin to take over at Jefferson West for long-time Tiger coach Steve Johnson. Bowen is well-traveled in recent years with stops at Thomas More Prep-Marian and Stanton County.

  • Nickerson – Reggie Langford

Reggie Langford takes over at Nickerson for John Wellman. The Panthers went 6-20 during Wellman’s three years.

  • Osawatomie – Reggie Langford

Beau Gadwood takes over at Osawatomie after long-time coach Rod Madden announced his retirement after last season. Gadwood was a former all-conference tight end at Fort Hays. He had a highly successful season with Osawatomie girls’ basketball last winter.

  • Riley County – Erik Willimon

Long-time assistant Erik Willimon takes over the Falcon program after Steve Wagner announced his retirement after last season.

  • Royal Valley – David Boucher

David Boucher takes over for Jake Lott after being an assistant at Royal Valley for the past several seasons. Boucher is another Smith Center alum now as a head coach.

  • Russell – Mark Baldwin

Mark Baldwin takes over at Russell for Otis Hendryx. The Broncos went 1-8 in their first season in the Mid-Continent League.


Class 2A

  • Atchison County – Alex Thornburgh

Thornburgh takes over a Tiger program looking for stability. Atchison County separated from coach Corey Thomas during the 2020 season, and the man hired as his replacement last winter resigned this spring. 

  • Chaparral – JC Zahradnik

Chaparral assistant JC Zahradnik steps into the head coaching role after Jordan Moshier left to take the job at Goodland. 

  • Ellis – James Johnston

Long-time South Barber and Lyons coach James Johnston takes over at Ellis for Ty Cass, who remains on staff as an assistant. Johnston has been teaching at in-county TMP-Marian.

  • Eureka – Bruce Munden

Bruce Munden takes over at Eureka after Jason Nichols left to become an assistant at Haysville Campus.

  • Jayhawk-Linn – Clint Johnson

Clint Johnson is the new coach at Jayhawk-Linn for Randy Leach.

  • Lyons – Carl Nolan

Carl Nolan is the new head coach at Lyons taking over for Andy Gwennap.

  • Nemaha Central – Michael Glatczak

Former Centralia all-stater Michael Glatczak is the new head coach at Nemaha Central. Glatczak takes over the highly successful Thunder program from Warren Seitz who is now the head coach at Versailles (Mo.).

  • Oskaloosa – Russell Norton

Russell Norton takes over at Oskaloosa as Matt Johnson transitions back to an assistant role for the Bears.

  • Republic County – Jesse Hodgson

Former South Gray coach Jesse Hodgson takes over at Republic County in place of Faron Kraft.

  • Syracuse – Dwight Green

Former Ingalls standout Jordan Irsik did an exceptional job in his short time at Syracuse, but left to take a job in California. Dwight Green will lead the Bulldogs this fall.


Class 1A

  • Northern Heights – Todd Callahan

Former Abilene assistant Todd Callahan takes over at Northern Heights to replace Darwin Sweetman.

  • Sublette – John Le

John Le takes over the Sublette Larks in place of Lance Carter.

  • Valley Heights – Cody Trimble

Cody Trimble takes over for his father, Tony, at Valley Heights. Tony Trimble has moved on to an assistant role at Hutchinson. 


Class 8-Man, Division I

  • Cedar Vale-Dexter – Luke Wachter

Luke Wachter takes over as the head coach of the Spartans after severing as the offensive coordinator in past seasons.

  • Flinthills – Chase Casteel

Chase Casteel is the new head coach of the Mustangs after taking over for Daniel Scribner.

  • Marmaton Valley – Max Mickunas

Max Mickunas takes over as head coach at Marmaton Valley in place of Garret Ericson.

  • Meade – Bryan Luetters

Assistant Bryan Luetters takes over the head role at Meade replacing Justin Powell.

  • Oberlin-Decatur Community – Brandon Hardwick

Former assistant Brandon Hardwick is the new head coach at Oberlin replacing Trevor Williams. Hardwick was a former standout lineman at Hays High.

  • Pretty Prairie – Matt Goering

Former assistant Matt Goering is the new head coach at Pretty Prairie replacing Dennis Detter.

  • Stockton – Justin Basart

Former assistant Justin Basart takes over as coach of the Tigers replacing Phil Conyac.

  • Valley Falls – Wyatt Hofstra

Wyatt Hofstra takes over the Dragon program after Sawyer Havenstein left to become the head coach at Mankato-Rock Hills.

  • Washington County – Tommy Tryon

Tommy Tryon takes over at Washington County in place of former head coach Doug Thompson.

 

Class 8-Man, Division II

  • Chase – Mitch Light

This is the fifth consecutive year that Chase will have a new head coach. Mitch Light returns to the sidelines to coach the Kats and try to provide some stability in what has been a revolving door of coaches of late. Light has been a longtime fixture on various coaching staffs at Chase.

  • Chetopa – Josh Ghering

Josh Ghering replaces Rick Aldridge as the Green Hornets chose to go in a different direction. 

  • Hutchinson Central Christian – Roberto Ibarra

Athletic Director Tony Urwiller led the Cougars for one season before giving way to Roberto Ibarra.  

  • Ingalls – Oree Johnson, IV

Oree Johnson, IV takes over at Ingalls after the Bulldogs had several solid years under Vestal Teeter.

  • Linn – Trevor Kuhlman

Trevor Kuhlman takes over at Linn after the Bulldogs didn’t field a team last fall.

  • Logan-Palco – Michael Hensley

Former Larned assistant Michael Hensley takes over the Logan-Palco program after a long successful run under Mike Jenner.

  • Mankato-Rock Hills – Sawyer Havenstein

Havenstein comes over from Valley Falls and replaces Colby Hamel who took a job in Nebraska.

  • Marais des Cygnes Valley – John Bass

John Bass takes over a promising Trojan team in place of former coach Lewis Whitson.

  • Southern Cloud – Ryan Perkins

Ryan Perkins takes over at Southern Cloud in place of Julian Aramendi. Perkins recorded more than 400 tackles in his career at Southern Cloud.

  • South Haven – Robert Weber

Robert Weber takes over at South Haven as Reese Blaylock transitions from head coach to an assistant.   

  • St. Francis – Grant Wiegers

After consecutive runs to the state championship game, Nick Fawcett left St. Francis to take the head coaching position at Ulysses and Grant Wiegers will take over the Indians.

  •    Wetmore – Miles Hanzlicek

Rick Schnacker is responsible for rebuilding the Wetmore football program, but he will step into an assistant role this season and allow for Miles Hanzlicek to take over as head coach.

 

6-Man Football

  • Deerfield – Adam Leroux

Adam Leroux takes over at Deerfield for Robert Cox, who left for the head coaching position at Natoma.

  •    Natoma – Robert Cox

Robert Cox takes over at Natoma after being in the same position at Deerfield a year ago.
