EAST
1-Gardner-Edgerton 42, 16-Shawnee Mission North 7 – Top-seed Gardner-Edgerton built a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised to 42-7 win over Shawnee Mission North. Gardner-Edgerton will now get a rematch against Blue Valley North – the team that eliminated them, 49-28, in last year’s Class 6A quarterfinals.
8-Blue Valley North 40, 9-Shawnee Mission South 0 – The 8-seed Mustangs opened their run towards a third consecutive Class 6A championship game appearance with a 40-0 shutout of 9-seed Shawnee Mission South. Blue Valley North led 7-0 after the first quarter and expanded their lead to 26-0 by halftime. The Mustangs advance to take on the winner of top-seed Gardner-Edgerton and 16-seed Shawnee Mission North. Bleu Valley North upset Gardner-Edgerton 49-28 in the state quarterfinals last season.
4-Olathe East 31, 13-Olathe South 20 – Olathe East defeated Olathe South for a second consecutive week. The Hawks scored a touchdown in the final two minutes before halftime take a 17-6 advantage. The Hawks then added a pair of scores to lead 31-6 in the fourth quarter before the Falcons tacked on a pair of late scores. Olathe East defeated South 32-21 last week.
5-Blue Valley 45, 12-Shawnee Mission East 14 – Blue Valley scored 24 points in the second quarter to build a 31-0 halftime lead. The Tigers then cruised to a 45-14 win over Shawnee Mission East. Quarterback Jake Wolff passed for 199 yards and two touchdowns. Beau Palmer rushed for a touchdown and returned an interception for a second score.
2-Olathe North 55, 15-Olathe Northwest 19 – Olathe North dominated Olathe Northwest for a second consecutive week. The Eagles led 27-7 at halftime and pulled away in the second half. Arland Bruce, IV rushed for 284 yards and four touchdowns in the win. Bruce, who has moved back to quarterback after the injury to Caleb Nelson, also passed for 131 yards and two scores. Nelson returned this week and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Simms. For the season, Bruce has rushed for 1,872 yards and 32 touchdowns.
7-KC Wyandotte 51, 10-KC Harmon 30 – Wyandotte advanced to the second round with a 51-30 win over Harmon. The Bulldogs led 31-6 in the third quarter. Wyandotte defeated Harmon for a second straight week as the Bulldogs won 35-0 last week. This is Wyandotte’s second playoff/bracket win in school history and first since 1987.
3-Shawnee Mission Northwest 56, 14-Blue Valley Northwest 42 – Shawnee Mission Northwest advance with a 56-42 shootout victory over Blue Valley Northwest. Cougar quarterback Ty Black passed for 270 yards and three touchdowns and added 224 rushing yards and three more scores in the win. Ty Lindenman had 114 receiving yards, two touchdowns, and returned an interception for another score.
6-Blue Valley West 46, 11-Shawnee Mission West 20 – Blue Valley West raced out to a 33-0 lead after one quarter in defeating Shawnee Mission West, 46-20. Quarterback Greg Riddle rushed for three touchdowns and passed for another to lead the Jaguar offense. Earl McDowell led the Vikings with 126 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns.
WEST
1-Derby 69, 16-Wichita North 7 – Derby led 28-0 midway through the first quarter. The Panthers were up 56-0 after the first quarter and 56-0 with 8 minutes, 34 seconds left in the first half. Derby has captured 22 straight contests. Wichita North finished with a winless season.
8-Wichita West 9, 9-Wichita East 6 – Wichita West topped Wichita East for a second consecutive week. The Pioneers defeated the Blue Aces 28-14 last week, but found themselves down 6-2 for after one quarter of the game on Friday. West eventually scored and won 9-6.
4-Manhattan 48, 13-Hutchinson 21 – B.J. Young rushed for three touchdowns in the first quarter as Manhattan eliminated Hutchinson, 48-21. The Indians led 35-7 at halftime. Dayne Aschenbrenner rushed for a touchdown in the second half and threw a touchdown pass before the break.
5-Lawrence Free State 34, 12-Wichita South 12 – The Lawrence Journal-World reported that junior Tyler Bowden broke two school records in the first quarter. He set Free State’s single season rushing record and single season points record. He has more than 1,707 rushing yards and more than 138 points scored. Free State had a 34-0 lead at halftime. Bowden finished the game with nine carries for 176 yards. Marcus Preston recorded four catches for 140 yards.
2-Dodge City 34, 15-Haysville-Campus 13 – Dodge City improved to 9-0 and scored the game’s final 27 points. Campus led 13-7 before junior Alden Knedler tied the game at 13 on an impressive 42-yard touchdown run down the left side with 2 minutes, 58 seconds left in the first half. Dodge City’s extra point gave the Red Demons a 14-13 lead. Dodge City scored again just before halftime on an eight-yard run from Knedler to led 21-13. Dodge City had a 51-yard pass to Matt Friess to set up the second Knedler touchdown. Knedler had 25 rushes for 181 yards, and quarterback Beau Foster had 32 carries for 148 yards. Dodge City defeated the Colts, 34-12, in Week 1. It marked the first time in 35 years DC had faced a team twice in the same season. Nose guard Santonio Turner enjoyed a big game with three tackles for loss and also served as a blocking back throughout the contest.
7-Junction City 48, 10-Wichita Southeast 21 – Junction City scored the game’s first 34 points in beating Wichita Southeast, 48-21. Andrew Khoury threw five touchdown passes to lead the Blue Jay offense. Khoury tossed two touchdowns each to Qua’Vez Humphreys and Russell Wilkey.
3-Topeka High 48, 14-Garden City 14 – Topeka High took control early and avoided a first-round scare with a 48-14 win over Garden City. Ky Thomas went 63 yards from scrimmage on the Trojans first offensive play for a quick 7-0 lead. Da’Vonshai Harden threw for nearly 290 yards and four touchdowns in the win.
6-Lawrence 38, 11-Washburn Rural 21 – Lawrence bounced back from its one-point loss to rival Lawrence Free State last week. Washburn Rural scored on the contest’s first offensive play on a 71-yard touchdown run from Jaylen Carter. However, Lawrence’s Devin Neal quickly had a 23-yard TD run. He tacked on a 14-yard scoring run for a 14-7 lead. The Lions led the rest of the contest. He also added a 31-yard touchdown in the third quarter. Overall, Neal rushed 24 times for 194 yards.
Class 5A
EAST
1-De Soto 62, 16-KC Turner 22 – De Soto rolled to a 62-22 victory over Turner. The Wildcats defeated the Golden Bears 71-0 earlier this season. Tyson Priddy and Russell Coy each rushed for early TDs and Jackson Miller tossed a TD pass to Hayden Henderson. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Schultze came in and rushed for three touchdowns and threw three touchdown passes.
8-Shawnee Heights 7, 9-Lansing 0 – The Thunderbirds and Lions played a completely different game than the one last week. Shawnee Heights made an Antonio Ruiz touchdown run in the third quarter stand up with a consistent defensive effort. Ray Mendoza intercepted a Lansing pass late in the fourth quarter to secure the win for Heights. Shawnee Heights defeated Lansing 35-17 last week.
4-Mill Valley, 13-Topeka West – Mill Valley scored 28 points in the first quarter in rolling to a 52-0 win over Topeka West. The Jaguar defense held the Chargers to less than 80 yards of total offense. Tyler Green rushed for more than 120 yards and two scores, while Quin Whittenauer added 90 yards and three touchdowns for Mill Valley.
5-Olathe West 49, 12-Topeka Seaman 28 – Olathe West scored all 49 points in the first half in rolling past Topeka Seaman, 49-28. Sophomore Anthony Favrow rushed for four touchdowns, including three in the first quarter as the Owls built a 28-0 lead. Favrow entered this week’s action with 1,077 rushing yards and 12 scores. Alex Birge also threw three touchdown passes in the first half, including two in the final minute as Olathe West built a 49-7 lead. Birge’s touchdown passes went to Luke Bishop, Connor Delong, and Jackson Novacek.
2-St. Thomas Aquinas 63, 15-Topeka Highland Park 0 – Aquinas led 28-0 after the first quarter and 49-0 at halftime. Tank Young delivered five carries for 142 yards and three touchdowns. Aquinas has won 20 straight games. The Saints ran 30 plays for 544 yards. Young has 154 carries for 1,385 yards and 22 rushing scores.
7-St. James Academy 27, 10-Leavenworth 14 – St. James Academy scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to secure a 27-14 win over Leavenworth. Michael Tujague rushed for 135 yards and score to lead the Thunder offense. The Thunder led 13-0 early and 20-7 at halftime before the Pioneers pulled to within six points in the third quarter. Jake Holton’s touchdown run in the fourth provided the separation to get the Thunder into the next round.
14-Blue Valley Southwest 31, 3-KC Washington 6 – Forget the 1-7 record entering this game, the Eastern Kansas League has prepared Blue Valley Southwest for the playoffs. The Timberwolves opened with a 31-6 win over 3-seed KC Washington on Friday, taking advantage of Wildcat miscues to build a 28-0 halftime lead. Southwest scored touchdowns after a muffed punt and an interception. Drew Jennings rushed for more than 100 yards and two touchdowns for a T-Wolves team that entered Friday with 76 net rushing yards all season. Quarterback Tanner Curry was good again in throwing a pair of touchdown passes – one to Jennings.
6-KC Schlagle 61, 11-KC Sumner Academy 13 – Kansas-commit Jaylin Richardson rushed for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns as Schlagle beat Sumner, 61-13. The Stallions defeated the Sabres for the second time this season, having won the earlier meeting 44-20.
WEST
1-Wichita Northwest 55, 16-Kapaun Mt. Carmel 14 – Northwest defeated the Crusaders for the second time this year after a 45-0 victory Oct 4. All of Friday’s points came in the first three quarters. Northwest led 21-7 after the first quarter and 42-7 at halftime. The Grizzlies will get a rematch with Great Bend in Week 10. Northwest defeated Great Bend, 31-0, in Week 3.
8-Great Bend 49, 9-Wichita Heights 35 – The Panthers had lost four in a row but captured its third straight victory with a 14-point home win versus the Falcons. Panther quarterback Dalton Miller delivered four rushing scores and 276 yards and passed for two scores, according to the Great Bend Tribune. Miller had a 64-yard touchdown run on the game’s first play, and Great Bend led 13-0. Heights tallied 14 straight points. The Panthers led 35-21 entering the fourth quarter.
4-Bishop Carroll 49, 13-Valley Center 7 – Bishop Carroll scored 35 points in the first half in eliminating Valley Center, 49-7. Hunter Trail rushed for a couple of early touchdowns and Aiden Niedens threw two touchdown passes and rushed for a score. Carroll will host Andover next week.
12-Andover 28, 5-Salina Central 7 – Andover had delivered an excellent defensive season with just 13.9 points allowed per contest in the first eight games. However, the Trojans had captured just two wins and had lost three in a row entering Friday. Salina Central ended the year with a 5-4 record after a 7-3 mark last year. Andover scored 21 unanswered points in the second half. In the first half, the Trojans tallied a score on a 75-yard halfback pass.
2-Maize South 31, 15-Salina South 0 – Maize South improved to 9-0 and had its third shutout in four games. Ethan Wiens kicked a 42-yard field goal for a 10-0 lead. Justice Morris scored on a long screen pass for a touchdown. Maize South led 17-0 at intermission.
10-Hays 31, 7-Goddard-Eisenhower 6 – Hays High improved to 4-5 and will play past Week 9 for the first time since 2012. Trey Adams enjoyed a huge game with an early interception. On the next play, Jaren Kanak scored on a 53-yard run. Adams also blocked an extra point to keep the score, 7-6. Adams had a couple of sacks and also scored a touchdown on a reception off a fake field goal for a 31-6 lead. Matt Goodale kicked a 42-yard field goal, and Hayden Brown tallied a pair of second half touchdowns. Goddard-Eisenhower finished 5-4.
3-Maize 49, 14-Liberal 14 – Maize bounced back from its big Week 8 loss to Derby. The 8-1 Eagles led 28-0 after the first quarter and 42-0 at halftime. Caden Cox finished with 10 rushes for 150 yards and a touchdown. Camden Jurgensen returned at quarterback and completed four of four passes for 101 yards and three TDs.
6-Emporia 41, 11-Newton 29 – Emporia held off Newton, 41-29, to advance to the second round. The Spartans led 26-10 in the first half before the Railers scored consecutive touchdowns – one before half and one after – to pull within 26-23. Emporia would widen the lead to 34-23 on a long Beau Baumgardner touchdown run, but Newton used a big night passing to pull back within 34-29 before Emporia scored for the final margin. Baumgardner rushed for 168 yards and two touchdowns on the night.
Class 4A
EAST
1-Tonganoxie 49, 16-Baldwin 0 – Tonganoxie shut out Baldwin for the second time in three weeks. Cooper Cunningham rushed for 112 yards and three scores and Blake Poje passed for 142 yards and three more touchdowns. The Chieftains beat Baldwin 55-0 in Week 7.
9-Spring Hill 17, 8-Pittsburg 13 – Spring Hill shut out Pittsburg 14-0 in the second half to win 17-13 at Hutchinson Field. Pittsburg took a 13-3 lead into halftime as L.J. Butcher hauled in two touchdown passes. The Broncos pulled within 13-10 in the third quarter then added a touchdown in the fourth quarter to pull off the road victory. It was Spring Hill’s first playoff win since 2013.
4-Bishop Miege 67, 13-Labette County 13 – Miege scored 48 points in the first quarter in cruising past Labette County. The Stag defense returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the opening quarter. Daniel Jackson caught three touchdown passes – two from Tim Dorsey and one from Joseph Lopez. Bishop Miege will host 5-seed Bonner Springs this week.
5-Bonner Springs 49, 12-Eudora 12 – Bonner Springs scored 35 points in the first half in rolling past Eudora, 49-12. Bryce Krone rushed for 244 yards and four touchdowns on 13 carries to push his season total to 2,182 yards and 29 scores. Quarterback Johnny Tapia added 162 passing yards including a touchdown pass to Rishaud Dockery.
2-Paola 56, 15-Ottawa 9 – Paola rolled past Ottawa for the second time this season, 56-9. The Panthers defeated the Cyclones 56-3 back in Week 3. Fletcher Aude and Evan Phillips each scored a pair of early touchdowns, and Garrett Williams rushed for a score and tossed a touchdown pass as the Panthers remained unbeaten.
10-KC Piper 56, 7-Basehor-Linwood 47 – KC Piper trailed by 19 points in the fourth quarter before rallying to top Basehor-Linwood, 56-47. The Pirates trailed 30-18 at halftime and 37-18 in the third quarter before scoring the game’s next 22 points. After a Bobcat score, Brandon Snell returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown and an interception quickly led to another Pirate score. La’James White put the Pirates ahead with a touchdown run as part of his nearly 180-yard night. The teams traded leads by alternating touchdowns field goals before White put the game away with a touchdown run. Piper freshman quarterback Logan Ladish also threw a pair of touchdown passes.
3-Chanute 28, 14-Fort Scott 7 – Chanute defeated SEK League rival Fort Scott for a second time in the last three weeks. The Blue Comets won the earlier meeting 42-21 and claimed Friday night’s playoff win, 28-7. Chanute opened the scoring with a double reverse pass from Briley Peavy back to quarterback Ty Bowman for a 62-yard touchdown late in the second quarter. Shortly after, Peavy returned an interception for a touchdown and a 14-0 halftime lead. Tyler Davis and Jaden Costin each added long touchdown runs in the second half to advance the Blue Comets.
6-Louisburg 14, 11-Atchison 7 – Louisburg avoided an upset by scoring twice in the third quarter to top Atchison, 14-7. The Wildcats had defeated the Redmen 41-12 during the regular season just three weeks ago. Louisburg will now take on Chanute (8-1) in the next round.
WEST
1-McPherson 63, 16-Abilene 7 – McPherson dominated Abilene for a second time this season and advanced to a second-round date with Goddard. The Bullpup defense held Abilene to negative yards rushing on the night. Meanwhile, McPherson opened the scoring with a blocked punt for a touchdown. Jakob Feil led the Bullpups with 94 yards rushing and two touchdowns.
8-Goddard 32, 9-Rose Hill 14 – Goddard advanced to the second round with a 32-14, turnover-filled victory over Rose Hill. The Lions and Rockets combined for ten turnovers on the night. Goddard opened the scoring on a blocked punt by Zeke Howell and a scoring run by Taygen Bantz. Kaeden Hoefer started at quarterback for the injured Kyler Semrad and rushed and passed for a touchdown in the game. Barring a major upset, the 8-seed Lions will likely take on top-seed McPherson next week.
4-Winfield 37, 13-El Dorado 0 – Winfield’s KC Crandall rushed for two touchdowns and threw a touchdown pass to Chance Price as the Vikings blanked El Dorado, 37-0. Winfield led 17-0 after the first quarter and added a defensive score and two Crandall touchdown runs in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Winfield will now take on Cowley County rival Ark City in the next round.
12-Arkansas City 55, 5-Ulysses 17 – This wasn’t an upset. Ark City rolled to a dominating 55-17 win at Ulysses taking out the frustration of three close losses during the regular season. After Braiden Mattocks opened the scoring with a touchdown, the Bulldogs surprised Ulysses with an onside kick which eventually resulted in a touchdown from freshman quarterback Gabe Welch and an early 14-0 lead. Welch then threw consecutive touchdown passes for a 28-0 first-quarter lead. Welch added two more touchdown passes as Ark City continued to pour on the points and advance to a second-round matchup with rival Winfield. Winfield defeated Ark City 20-18 in the season opener.
2-Andover Central 42, 15-Towanda-Circle 7 – Andover Central scored 21 points in each of the first and second quarters in rolling past Circle, 42-7. Shomari Parnell threw a touchdown pass in limited action, while Matthew Macy and Xavier Bell each caught touchdown passes. Sophomore Ashton Barkdull led the Jaguar ground game with 75 yards on six carries and a touchdown.
7-Augusta 29, 10-Coffeyville 26 (2OT) – Augusta’s Tyler Kohls connected on a 33-yard field goal in the second overtime to lift the Orioles to a 29-26 win over Coffeyville-Field Kindley. After both teams scored touchdowns on their initial overtime possession, Coffeyville lost a fumble on their second OT attempt setting up Kohls’ heroics. Augusta, which led 19-6 at one point, nearly own the game in regulation as a final play aided by two Coffeyville personal fouls set up the Orioles just inside the 10-yard line. Augusta’s potential game-winning field goal attempt in regulation was derailed by an errant snap, but the Oriole holder completed a pass to a receiver who was tackled at the 1-yard line to force overtime.
3-Buhler 19, 14-Wellington 7 – Buhler held off Wellingotn, 19-7 to advance to the second round. The host Crusaders took advantage of an early Wellington fumble to take a 6-0 lead on the visiting Crusaders. After Wellington grabbed a 7-6 lead, Buhler scored on a Cade Miller touchdown pass to Kahalewai McDowell to lead 12-7 at halftime. Austin Gentery added a touchdown run in the third quarter for the final margin.
6-Mulvane 47, 11-Independence 14 – Mulvane won its fifth consecutive game by handling Independence, 47-14. The Wildcats led 47-0 through three quarters. Cole Diffenbaugh rushed for a pair of early scores and finished with 57 yards rushing. Tanner Claar led the Wildcats with 85 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Class 3A
Frontenac 34, Girard 0 – Frontenac advanced to the next round with a 34-0 shutout of CNC League rival Girard. Quarterback Jake Beckmann rushed for two touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes to Cale Bridwell in the first half as the Raiders built a 28-0 lead. Frontenac will host Galena next week. The Raiders beat the Bulldogs 27-14 earlier this season.
Galena 44, Burlington 34 – Galena traveled to Burlington and defeated the host Wildcats, 44-34. The Bulldogs scored 22 points in each half in picking up their sixth win of the season. Galena will travel to Frontenac next week for a rematch of a regular-season game won by the Raiders, 27-14. Galena defeated Frontenac 27-7 in the second round last season on its way to a state semifinal finish.
Topeka Hayden 35, Sabetha 0 – Topeka Hayden ended Sabetha’s run towards a third-straight state title with a 35-0 shutout. The Wildcats dominated up front in taking a 21-0 halftime lead behind touchdown runs from Will DeVader, Jack Konrade and Desmond Purnell. DeVader added a in the third quarter and Purnell caught a touchdown pass from Johnny Holloway. Hollloway passed for more than 200 yards in the game. Gabe Garber ended his incredible Blue Jay career with 97 rush yards and 89 passing yards.
Jefferson West 20, Marysville 14 – Jefferson West eliminated Marysville 20-14 thanks to two third-quarter touchdowns. Marysville led 14-6 at halftime, but the Tigers scored to pull within 14-12 in the third quarter. Jeff West then blocked a Bulldog punt for a touchdown that proved to be the winning score. The Tigers advance to take on Topeka Hayden. Hayden handed Jeff West its only loss of the season, 13-6, back in Week 5.
Prairie View 34, Caney Valley 7 – Prairie View scored 20 points in the second half to break open a 14-7 game and defeat Caney Valley, 34-7. Justin Scott rushed for two touchdowns as the Buffaloes rushed for more than 350 yards in the game. Caney Valley played without quarterback Trey Richey – a three-year starter.
Columbus 33, Anderson County 20 – Columbus rebounded from a loss to Frontenac with a 33-20 playoff win over Anderson County. The Titans used a strong second half after trailing the Bulldogs 7-6 at the break. Quarterback Patrick Cassidy scored on a pair of touchdown runs and the Titan defense set up another score with an interception.
Holton 34, Santa Fe Trail 27 – Santa Fe Trail used an effective passing game to challenge Holton, but ultimately the Wildcats prevailed, 34-27. The Chargers led 20-14 at halftime, but the Holton defense held the Trail offense to a single touchdown after the break. Holton snapped a 27-27 tie with a touchdown in the fourth quarter for the win. Santa Fe Trail’s Andrew Berckefeldt passed for 260 yards and three touchdowns on the night.
Perry-Lecompton 38, Wamego 21 – Perry-Lecompton shut out Wamego 24-0 in the second half to earn a 38-21 first-round victory. The Kaws trailed 21-7 in the second quarter before Thad Metcalfe’s score cut the deficit to 21-14. Billy Welch added a pair of rushing touchdowns after halftime to put the Kaws in the lead. Welch passed for more than 220 yards and a touchdown. The Kaws eliminated Wamego for the second consecutive season after last years’ 34-20 first-round win.
WEST
Wichita Collegiate 35, Halstead 14 – Wichita Collegiate scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to knock out No. 2 ranked Halstead, 35-14. The Spartans led 7-6 at halftime and 14-6 after three quarters before Nate Voegeli’s long touchdown pass to Wesley Fair expanded the lead to 21-6 early in the fourth quarter. Voegeli passed for nearly 100 yards and a that touchdowns and added 76 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. The story for Collegiate was Aiden Walsh who rushed for 230 yards and a score, including a 99-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Halstead’s Scott Grider, who suffered an injury during the game, led the Dragons with 88 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Cheney 51, Rock Creek 18 – Cheney scored 31 points in the first half as part of their 51-18 win over Rock Creek. Zac Block threw four touchdown passes and rushed for another score as the Cardinals rolled to their seventh win. Harrison Voth caught two touchdown passes and added a rushing score, while Riley Petz had over 100 yards receiving and two scores.
Concordia 43, Hugoton 18 – Concordia made the long trip to Hugoton worthwhile with a 43-18 victory. The Panthers led 16-6 at halftime and outscored the Eagles 27-12 in the second half. Concordia rushed for more than 440 yards in the contest led by quarterback Wyatt Trost’s 184 yards and four touchdowns. Hunter Schroeder added 129 yards and a pair of scores and Keyan Miller chipped in 100 yards on 15 carries. This was Concordia’s first playoff win since 2014.
Scott City 35, Holcomb 18 – Scott City scored a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to hold off Holcomb, 35-18. The Beavers took a 21-6 lead on a Cale Goodman touchdown in the third quarter only to see Holcomb close the gap to 21-18 on a pair of Kaden Johnson touchdown passes. Parker Gooden and Hutner Yager would go on to add touchdowns in the final period to provide the final 35-18 margin. Yager rushed for 175 yards and two scores to lead Scott City.
Andale 68, Clay Center 7 – Top-ranked Andale rolled to a 68-7 first-round victory over Clay Center. The Indians scored 28 points in the first quarter and 34 more in the second quarter to lead 62-7 at halftime. Eli Rowland led the Indians with 119 yards and three touchdowns on the ground, while Easton Hunter tossed a pair of touchdown passes. Noah Meyer rushed for two touchdowns and passed for another.
Clearwater 35, Hesston 28 – Clearwater scored in each quarter and held off Hesston, 35-28. Tanner Cash threw four touchdown passes as part of his 210-yard night. Cash also added 160 yards on the ground and another score. Drake Beatty caught two of Cash’s touchdown passes and had 125 yards receiving.
Colby 42, Nickerson 0 – Colby’s defense stifled a short-handed Nickerson team in a 42-0 win. Nickerson, playing without starting quarterback Tre’ Garcia, managed 110 yards of total offense. Calvin Stapp led Colby with 135 yards on the ground and two scores. Stapp also caught a touchdown pass from Ryan Myers.
Beloit 44, Larned 6 – Beloit traveled two Larned and picked up a dominating 44-6 win over the Indians. Carson Cox rushed for two scores and Grant Arasmith added a touchdown on the ground as the Trojans took control early. Beloit now advances to take on Colby in a rematch of a District 8 game won by Colby 21-20 back in Week 4.
Class 2A
Humboldt 70, Central Heights 8 – Humboldt rolled to a 70-8 victory over Central Heights in the opening round. The Cubs led 36-0 after one quarter and 64-0 at halftime. Humboldt will now host Southeast-Cherokee in the second round. The Cubs defeated the Lancers, 50-18, in district play last week.
Southeast-Cherokee 12, Osage City 6 (2 OT) – Bryce Petersen scored on a 1-yard sneak in the second overtime to lift Southeast past Osage City, 12-6. This marks the first playoff win for the Lancers since 2010 when Southeast defeated Central Heights, 37-12. Southeast improved to 7-2 with the win – the most wins in a season since 2005. Last season, Osage City defeated the Lancers in the first round, 28-6.
Nemaha Central 49, St. Marys 20 – Nemaha Central led St. Marys 21-6 at halftime, then scored touchdowns via a punt return and interception return out of the break to pull away from the Bears. Gavin Duryea led the Thunder with 161 yards rushing, while Dylan Schultejans rushed for a score and threw a touchdown pass to Bryce Uphaus.
Rossville 42, Maur Hill-Mount Academy 7 – Rossville dominated Maur Hill-Mount Academy in what many anticipated could be one of the better first-round matchups. Torry Horak passed for 138 yards and two scores and added 94 yards rushing and two more scores. Tyree Sowers also rushed for two touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass from Horak.
Silver Lake 68, Jayhawk-Linn 8 – Silver Lake cruised into the second round with a 68-8 victory over Jayhawk-Linn. The Eagles will host Riverton in the next round. The Eagles and Rams last met in the state semifinals back in 2008.
Riverton 44, Oskaloosa 14 – Riverton improved to 6-3 on the season with a 44-14 win over Oskaloosa. The Rams hadn’t won more than two games in a season since 2014, but have now won three straight and five of their last six. On Thursday night, Riverton led the Bears 44-0 at halftime.
Riley County 38, Pleasant Ridge 20 – Riley County advanced past Pleasant Ridge, 38-20, thanks to a big night from Deon Barnes. Barnes rushed for 207 yards and three scores to push his season total to 963 yards and 17 scores. Trey Harmison and Avery Brokenicky also rushed for touchdowns for the Falcons.
Southeast of Saline 47, Riverside 16 – Southeast of Saline scored 32 consecutive points in the second half to break open a close game and end a solid season by Riverside. Riverside scored out of halftime to take a 16-15 lead on a Kobe Davis touchdown pass to Bradley Libel. Southeast of Saline would take the lead for good on a interception return for a touchdown by Bryant Banks. Banks’ interception was one of four picks by Trojan defenders in the second half.
WEST
Eureka 31, Hutchinson Trinity 6 – Eureka picked up its first playoff win since 2002 with a 31-6 decision over Trinity Catholic. The Tornadoes got on the board in the first quarter with a Brent Escareno touchdown run followed by a safety for a 9-0 lead. A touchdown before half made it 16-0 at the break. Brennan Lowe added a short scoring run in the third quarter for a 23-0 lead. Eureka will now take on Conway Springs – the team that eliminated the Tornadoes in the first round last season.
Conway Springs 42, Cherryvale 13 – Conway Springs scored all 42 points in the first half of a 42-13 win over Cherryvale. The Cardinals played without quarterback Collin Koester for a second-consecutive game, but junior Heath Hilger stepped up with 207 rushing yards and four touchdowns in the win. Hilger also threw a 41-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Koester.
Cimarron 36, Minneapolis 0 – Cimarron scored in each quarter as part of a 36-0 shutout of Minneapolis. Senior Payton Marshall rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns and Tate Seabolt added 130 yards and two more scores for the Blue Jays.
Norton 41, Sterling 7 – Norton knocked out Sterling, 41-7, to earn a date with unbeaten Cimarron next week. Norton jumped out to a 27-0 lead after one quarter and led 34-0 by halftime. The Blue Jays held Sterling scoreless until 3:45 remaining in the game.
Garden Plain 61, Fredonia 7 – The third-ranked Owls rolled to a 61-7 win over Fredonia on Thursday night. Garden Plain scored 28 points in the first quarter and led 55-0 at halftime. Matt Pauly threw three touchdown passes and rushed for 104 yards and two more scores. Garden Plain advances to take on Central Plains League rival Belle Plaine.
Belle Plaine 17, Chaparral 14 – Belle Plaine captured the schools’ first playoff win since 1990 with a dramatic 17-14 decision over Central Plains League rival Chaparral. Belle Plaine held a slight 10-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Iverson Bello then gave Chaparral a 14-10 lead on a touchdown run mid-way through the fourth quarter. Belle Plaine’s Eli Wiseman took the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown on what proved to be the game-winning score.
Hoisington 47, Southwestern Heights 0 – Hoisington cruised to a 47-0 victory over Southwestern Heights to improve to 9-0. Senior Wyatt Pedigo rushed for 211 yards and two touchdowns on only five carries. Maxon Haxton completed only five passes, but four of them went for touchdowns. Avery Brewer caught two Haxton touchdown throws, while Pedigo and Cade Mason each added a touchdown catch.
Lakin 21, Ellsworth 14 – Lakin edged Ellsworth 21-14 to advance to the second round for a second straight season. The Broncs improved to 8-1 on the season and will take on top-ranked Hoisington in round two. Lakin now has four playoffs wins in school history and will by vying for the third state quarterfinal appearance in school history.
Class 1A
St. Mary’s Colgan 57, Leon-Bluestem 0 – Colgan rolled past Bluestem on Thursday night, 57-0. The Panthers scored 21 points in the first quarter and 27 more in the second to take a 48-0 halftime lead. The younger Panther players helped contribute a touchdown and a field goal in the second half for the final margin.
Hillsboro 49, Pleasanton 0 – Hillsboro pulled away from Pleasanton in the second half of a 49-0 victory. The Trojans led 15-0 at halftime before scoring three touchdowns in the third quarter. Hillsboro advances to take on St. Mary’s Colgan in a rematch of a second-round game from last season won by Colgan, 45-20.
Jackson Heights 42, Wabaunsee 0 – Jackson Heights shut out Wabaunsee 42-0 on Thursday. Cooper Williams rushed for four touchdowns spanning 190 yards as the Cobras cruised to a 35-0 halftime lead. Jason Bosley also added a pair of touchdowns on runs of 76 and 58 yards.
Valley Heights 60, Jefferson Co. North 34 – Valley Heights trailed Jefferson Co. North 14-12 after the first quarter, but the Mustangs eventually took control. Valley Heights scored 28 points in the second quarter to take a 40-20 lead in to halftime. In the end, the Mustangs held on for a 60-34 victory and earned a date with Jackson Heights next week. The Cobras won the earlier meeting this season, 26-12.
Olpe 1, Yates Center 0 – Olpe advances to the next round as Yates Center forfeited due to lack of available players.
Uniontown 33, Marion 8 – Uniontown picked up its first playoff victory since 2006 with a 33-8 win over Marion. Uniontown built a 21-0 halftime lead and never allowed the Warriors to get back in the game. The Eagles improved to 4-5 under first-year coach John Stark.
Centralia 50, Troy 0 – Centralia scored 24 points in the first quarter in rolling past Twin Valley League rival Troy, 50-0. The Panthers led 38-0 at halftime and defeated the Trojans for a second time this season. Centralia won the earlier meeting, 46-12.
Northern Heights 44, Lyndon 14 – Northern Heights avenged a 34-24 loss to Lyndon during the regular season to eliminate the Tigers, 44-14. The Wildcats never trailed and outscored Lyndon 30-8 in the second half to advance. Cameron Heiman rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns and passed for 160 yards and another score for the Wildcats. Tee Preisner added a pair of rushing touchdowns and caught a touchdown pass. Luke Detwiler scored both Lyndon touchdowns on a catch from Darian Massy and a kickoff return for a score.
WEST
Smith Center 35, La Crosse 14 – Smith Center led 7-6 late in the second quarter before the Redmen took firm control by scoring three touchdowns in the final three minutes for a 28-6 halftime lead. La Crosse scored late in the game for the final margin.
Republic County 54, Ellis 16 – Despite their record, we’ve said all season that Republic County is a dangerous team. The Buffaloes routed Ellis, 54-16, in the first round behind a consistent rushing attack that produced 417 yards on 64 attempts. Junior Jared Baxa led the Buffs with 224 yards on 27 carries, while classmate Kaleb Talkington added 100 yards on 19 attempts.
Sedgwick – bye – Sedgwick received a bye to the second round for the second straight season given there are only three teams in the neighboring District 8. As champion of District 7, the Cardinals would have been matched up against the No. 4 finisher out of District 8.
Meade 42, Syracuse 6 – Meade scored 21 points in the first quarter in beating Syracuse, 42-6. Sophomore Korben Clawson rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Buffaloes. Classmate Torren Haynes added 71 yards and two scores on the ground for Meade. Both Haynes and Clawson threw touchdown passes.
Plainville 56, Sacred Heart 7 – Plainville rolled to a 56-7 win over Sacred Heart behind 35 first-quarter points. Senior Jared Casey rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns in the game, while Jordan Finnesy added 67 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns. Finnesy also threw a touchdown pass to Cody Crawford.
Ell-Saline 27, Oakley 14 – Ell-Saline held off Oakley, 27-14, to advance to the second round. The Cardinals rebounded from last week’s loss to Smith Center by rushing for nearly 400 yards. Luke Parks rushed for more than 200 yards and two three touchdowns in the win.
Elkhart 55, Sublette 24 - Elkhart defeated Sublette for a second consecutive season to open the Class 1A bracket. The Wildcats used a 21-point fourth quarter to provide separation in a game that was 34-18 after three quarters. Chance O’Hair rushed for 153 yards and three scores, while Jaxon Hastings rushed for 109 yards and a score and Emmanuel Moreno added 98 yards and two scores. Elkhart rushed for 475 yards on the night. Freshman quarterback Miquel Hernandez passed for 169 yards and three touchdowns for Sublette.
Inman 49, Stanton County 6 – Inman built a 35-0 halftime lead in eliminating Stanton County for a second-consecutive season. Kolby Blank rushed for four touchdowns in the first half for the Teutons. For the game, Blank rushed for more than 260 yards and scored five times.
Class 8-Man, Division I
Caldwell 46, Cedar Vale-Dexter 30 – Caldwell and Cedar Vale-Dexter were tied at 24 at halftime, but the Blue Jays used a defensive score to spark a second-half rally and win, 46-30. Dawson Bristor forced a Spartan fumble and Trey Strnad scooped up the ball and raced for a touchdown to give Caldwell a 30-24 lead late in the third quarter. By the end of the third quarter, Jude Stow added a score for a 38-24 lead. Cedar Vale-Dexter pulled within 38-30 early in the fourth quarter, but Stow added another touchdown run for the final 46-30 margin. Caldwell will travel to Medicine Lodge in a district rematch from Week 8 of the regular season – won by Caldwell, 48-34.
Medicine Lodge 58, Central Burden 12 – Josh Bowman had a big night as Medicine Lodge advanced to the second round with a 58-12 win over Central Burden. Bowman passed for 144 yards and four touchdowns and added 138 yards rushing. Freshman Cauy Scripsick rushed for 87 yards and had 41 yards receiving. The Indians advance to take Caldwell. Medicine Lodge lost to Caldwell, 48-34, on the last week of the regular season.
Madison 57, Solomon 0 – Madison avenged last season’s second-round loss to Solomon with a 57-0 blowout in round one this season. Madison jumped out to a 35-0 lead after the first quarter. The Bulldogs took advantage of several Gorilla turnovers. Ryan Wolgram rushed for two touchdowns and threw two touchdown passes in the win.
Maranatha Academy 76, Bennington 44 – Maranatha Christian Academy topped Bennington, 76-44, to pick up the schools’ first-ever playoff win. The Eagles won despite missing quarterback Nate Burdette for a second consecutive game. Brock West played well for a second week in transitioning from receiver to quarterback. In addition to passing and rushing for touchdowns, West also returned an interception for another score.
South Central 47, West Elk 0 – South Central shut out West Elk 47-0 to open what they hope will be another deep playoff run. Jonny Robles, Eli Jellison, and Gage Girk each rushed for touchdowns, while Girk tossed a touchdown pass to Landon Uhl.
Argonia-Attica 38, Sedan 32 – For the second straight season, Argonia-Attica won at Sedan to advance. On Thursday, the Titans withheld a late charge from the Blue Devils to prevail, 38-32. A&A scored two touchdowns in the final minute of the second quarter to turn a two-point deficit into a 26-16 halftime lead. That score held until the fourth quarter when the Titans added another touchdown to go up 32-16. Sedan pulled to within 32-24 before A&A added another score late to widen the lead to 14. Last season, Argonia-Attica used 20 points in the fourth quarter to break an 8-8 tie and win a muddy game at Sedan.
Canton-Galva 46, Chase County 0 – Canton-Galva rolled to a first-round playoff win over Chase County. The Eagles beat the Bulldogs by the identical 46-0 score for the second time this season. Canton-Galva has still only allowed opponents to score 31 points this season – the best in the classification.
Lebo 58, Goessel 8 – Lebo took control with 28 points in the first quarter in beating Goessel, 58-8 by halftime. Devan McEwen passed for 119 yards and threw touchdowns to three different receivers. McEwen and Andrew Bailey each rushed for a pair of touchdowns. Bailey, Luke Davies, and Kaden Ott all caught scoring passes from McEwen.
WEST
Little River 54, South Gray 0 – Little River exploded for 40 points in the second quarter of Thursday’s 54-0 shutout of South Gray. The Redskins were led by junior Graham Stephens who rushed for four touchdowns and 69 yards. Jayden Garrison added 58 yards rushing and two scores. The Redskin defense forced four turnovers including Evan Johanning’s interception return for a touchdown.
Ness City 23, Macksville 8 – Ness City defeated Macksville to open the playoff bracket for a second-consecutive season. The Eagles and Mustangs played a scoreless first half until Alex Rodriguez kicked a field goal to end the half. Nate Gabel added a touchdown run in the third quarter for a 9-0 lead. Macksville pulled within 15-8 in the third quarter before Gabel added another touchdown. The Eagles beat the Mustangs 44-20 in the first round last season.
Clifton-Clyde 66, Hoxie 20 – Clifton-Clyde blitzed Hoxie 66-20 to avenge last season’s 22-20 second-round playoff loss to the Indians. The Eagles returned an interception and a punt for a touchdown early as they built a 38-6 lead in the first quarter. The Eagle defense limited Hoxie to 126 total yards and forced three turnovers.
Leoti-Wichita Co. 88, Victoria 66 – Wichita County survived a wild first-round shootout with a strong defensive performance in the second half. The Indians outscored the Knights 42-6 in the second half to win 88-66. That’s right, Victoria led 60-46 at halftime. Both teams came outscoring as Victoria scored on a blocked punt and a kick return in the first quarter. When the opening quarter ended, Wichita County led 40-30. Victoria outscored the Indians 30-6 in the second quarter to go into halftime with the 14-point lead. Wichita County quarterback Kayde Rietzke rushed for five touchdown and threw four touchdown passes.
Hodgeman County 54, Moundridge 0 – Hodgeman County bounced Moundridge 54-0 using an effective passing game. Isaac Salmans passed for 228 yards and six touchdowns in the win as Hodgeman County rushed for only 104 yards. Ethan Burns caught three passes – all three of which went for touchdowns. Eli Salmans, Dalton Lee, and Conner Ruff each caught touchdown passes.
Spearville 48, Pratt-Skyline 26 – Spearville stopped a three-game losing streak with a 48-26 win at Pratt-Skyline. Carson Rich rushed for 206 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries to lead the Royal Lancers. Trace Tasset also added a touchdown run and caught a touchdown pass.
St. Francis 46, Washington County 0 – St. Francis earned its sixth shutout of the season and with a 46-0 win over Washington County. The Indians will now take on Hill City (5-3) in the next round.
Hill City 64, WaKeeney-Trego 40 – Hill City steadily pulled away from WaKeeney-Trego for a 64-40 win on Friday night. Senior Dalen Journigan rushed for 289 yards on 31 carries as the Ringnecks piled up 376 yards on the ground. Hunter Price lead Trego with 204 rushing yards and four touchdowns in a losing effort.
Class 8-Man, Division II
St. Paul 64, Hartford 0 – St. Paul scored 64 points in a little more than a quarter-and-a-half in rolling past Hartford, 64-0. The Indians returned four interceptions for touchdowns on the night and had another punt return for a score.
Waverly 62, Marmaton Valley 14 – Waverly picked up the first playoff win of the Nick Fraenza era by beating Marmaton Valley, 62-14. Fraenza, who took over for longtime coach Mike Hevel, has led the Bulldogs to a 6-3 record. Waverly has won six of its past seven games after consecutive losses to Lebo and Madison to open the season.
Hanover 48, Pike Valley 0 – Hanover opened its title defense with a 48-0 shutout of Pike Valley. The Wildcats also defeated the Panthers, 58-14, in the season opener. Hanover advances to host Twin Valley League rival Frankfort. Hanover beat Frankfort 52-34 in district play last week.
Frankfort 54, Mankato-Rock Hills 8 – Frankfort rolled to a 54-8 victory over Manakto-Rock Hills. Garrret Dalinghaus rushed for 181 yards and five touchdowns in the game as the Wildcats put up 250 yards rushing. The Frankfort defense was equally impressive in limiting Rock Hill standout Rylee Whelchel to 26 rush yards on 12 attempts.
Centre-Lost Springs 56, Altoona-Midway 0 – Centre ended Altoona-Midway’s season with a 56-0 shutout. The Cougars were led by Jensen Riffel who rushed for 121 yards and three touchdowns on only six carries. Riffel also caught a touchdown pass in the win.
Colony-Crest 52, Marais des Cygnes Valley 12 – Colony-Crest turned in an impressive performance in a 40-point opening-round win over Marais des Cygnes Valley. The Lancers limited the Trojans to 12 points after MdCV had recently had outputs of 54, 52, and 82 points in district games. Crest has now won five consecutive games.
Beloit St. John’s-Tipton 50, Onaga 0 – St. John’s-Tipton steadily pulled away from Onaga to earn a 50-0, first-round win. The Blujays led 18-0 after the first quarter, and 24-0 at halftime. Finally, St. John’s-Tipton ended the game mid-way through the fourth quarter with a touchdown to reach the 45-point mercy rule.
Axtell 52, Lakeside-Downs 0 – Axtell scored 22 points in the first quarter and 30 more in the second to defeat Lakeside-Downs. Quinn Buessing threw two touchdown passes and rushed for 96 yards and two more scores in the win. Derek Buessing and Isaac Detweiler also each added a touchdown on the ground. The Eagle defense held the Knights to 59 total yards on 36 plays.
WEST
Osborne 56, Sharon Springs-Wallace Co. 8 – Top-ranked Osborne cruised to a 56-8 victory over Wallace County in a game called at half. The Bulldogs scored 32 points in the first quarter to take control. Osborne will host Sylvan-Lucas Unified in the next round. The Bulldogs defeated the Mustangs 48-0 earlier this season.
Sylvan-Lucas 52, Triplains-Brewster 8 – Sylvan-Lucas finished third in the District 5 standings but pulled away from Triplains-Brewster on Thursday night. The Mustangs will now travel to take on Osborne next week. Osborne defeated Sylvan-Lucas, 48-0, in a district game back in Week 4.
South Barber 70, Bucklin 20 – South Barber made sure Bucklin’s first playoff appearance since 2006 was a short one. The Chieftains defeated the Red Aces 70-20 to advance to next week where they will host Norwich. South Barber defeated Norwich 64-6 back in early October.
Norwich 22, Otis-Bison 6 – Norwich picked up an impressive road victory at Otis-Bison, 22-6, in a defensive struggle. The Eagles led 8-6 at halftime, but scored twice in the third quarter to provide some cushion. This is Norwich’s first playoff appearance in 11 years.
Wheatland-Grinnell 44, Northern Valley 30 – Wheatland-Grinnell picked up its first playoff win since the two schools consolidated back in the early 2000s. The Thunderhawks beat Northern Valley, 44-30, after topping the Huskies 28-18 back in Week 3 of the regular season.
Thunder Ridge 50, Quinter 0 – Thunder Ridge rolled into the next round with a 50-0 blanking of Quinter. Reece Struckhoff rushed for 195 yards and five touchdowns on just ten carries. The Longhorns will travel to Wheatland-Grinnell next week.
Minneola 50, South Haven 0 – Minneola advanced to next week with a 50-0 shutout of South Haven. Tuck Lang rushed for 214 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Wildcats, while Sebastian Colbert added 100 yards and three scores.
Central Christian 54, Ingalls 6 – Central Christian defeated Ingalls to open the bracket for a second consecutive season. Garrett Burns led the Cougars with 88 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The Cougars will take on Minneola next week.
6-Man Football
Golden Plains 60, Pawnee Heights 8 – Golden Plains advanced to the semifinals with a 60-8 win over Pawnee Heights. Roberto Loya rushed for 139 yards and two scores for the Bulldogs. Harley Weese scored a rushing touchdown, had two touchdown catches, and returned one of his three interceptions for a score.
Weskan 58, Ashland 54 – Weskan slipped by Ashland, 58-54, to advance to the 6-Man semifinals. The Coyotes have won the 6-Man state title in two of the three seasons of the association and taken third place the other year. Weskan is now 7-1 in the 6-Man playoffs in the last three season.
