BELOIT – The West squad defeated the East, 32-24, in a tightly contested 8-Man Division I All-Star game on Saturday.
The West led, 16-6, at half, but trailed, 18-16, to end the third.
The West squad’s first possession started with an eight-yard run by Brayden Bloomfield of Clifton-Clyde. After a penalty, Bloomfield’s 15-yard run netted a first down at the 23-yard line.
Broeckelman’s six-yard run took the ball to near midfield before Bloomfield’s first down run to the East 22. Broeckelman ran the ball for a two-yard gain. On third down, a short run by Quinter’s Jordon Hargitt led to fourth and seven. Bloomfield’s incomplete pass resulted in a turnover on downs.
The East squad’s initial possession began with a seven-yard run by Kyle Haverkamp of Baileyville B&B. A 20-yard run by Haverkamp resulted in a first down at the West 35.
Baileyville’s Ryan Huerter ran for two yards before a six-yard reception by Garrett Breech of Flinthills. Huerter’s four-yard run gave the East a first down. Breech ran for two yards, but his short reception on fourth and long gave the ball to the West.
Bloomfield started his team’s possession with an eight-yard run before running 47 yards for a touchdown to start the scoring. The two-point conversion was good, giving the West an 8-0 lead at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter.
On the subsequent kickoff, Huerter was tackled at the East 10. Haverkamp ran for eight yards before recovering a fumble for a four-yard gain. Huerter ran for four yards on second down, but an incomplete pass led to a punt by Central Burden’s Jacob Lawson on fourth and six.
On first down at the 32, Bloomfield ran for three yards. Triplains-Brewster’s Brett Gfeller had a six-yard run before a short run by Bloomfield gave the West a first down. Bloomfield’s five-yard run on third down gave his team a fourth and five as the quarter ended.
The East regained possession after forcing an incomplete pass to start the second quarter.
Breech had a seven-yard reception before a penalty against the West gave the East a first down at the 21. After Haverkamp’s four-yard run, Lebo’s Cole Broeckelman ran for eight yards to give the East a first and goal.
Haverkamp runs on first and third downs led to fourth down at the six. On his next run, Haverkamp stepped out of bounds at the two, giving the ball back to the West. Broeckelman started the following possession with a first-down run to the 15. Short runs by Bloomfield and Hargitt resulted in third and six. Thunder Ridge’s Cade Rietzke ran for five yards to set up a fourth down at the 25.
The ensuing punt went out of bounds, giving the East the ball near its own 30. After Breech’s eight-yard catch, an interference penalty against Broeckelman moved the ball to the West 26.
Following a three-yard loss on a fumble recovery, Broeckelman intercepted a pass at the West 12. A catch by Macksville’s Evan Loomis on second down set up a third and one. Greensburg’s Nathan Charlton's run led to fourth down.
Bloomfield’s punt was caught by Huerter at the East 23. After runs by Breech and Haverkamp combined to produce six yards, Huerter took a pitch from Udall’s Skylor Kistler for a first.
Kistler followed with a 13-yard grab. On second down, Breech’s 25-yard run gave his squad a first and goal at the two. Haverkamp ran for a touchdown, but the PAT try was unsuccessful. The West led, 8-6, in the last half minute of the first half.
Broeckelman returned the following kickoff to the East 38. Bloomfield’s 31-yard reception put the West in position to score. Loomis followed with a touchdown grab, and the PAT conversion succeeded to make the West’s lead 16-6 at the half.
The East’s Breech returned the kickoff to open the second half to the 20-yard line. Huerter followed with a 27-yard reception. Haverkamp’s six-yard run on second down produced a third and six. Two incomplete passes gave the ball back to the West.
With a first down at the East 36, Bloomfield and Broeckelman had short runs before a penalty against the defense resulted in a first down at the 25. Bloomfield’s pass was intercepted by Huerter, who returned it to the 35.
A penalty against the East caused it to start its drive inside the 20. Claflin’s Devin Hoffman ran for eight yards before Lawson’s five-yard run resulted in a first down at the 30.
A penalty against the defense advanced the ball 15 yards before Hoffman was sacked. Breech’s reception inside the 10 resulted in a first and goal. On second down, Huerter ran nine yards for a touchdown. An unsuccessful PAT left the West with a 16-12 lead with 6:16 remaining in the third.
The West started the next possession with a four-yard gain, followed by a run by Hargitt to the 29 for a first down. On third and nine, Hargitt’s 13-yard run produced another first down.
After Loomis’s first down reception, Hargitt ran to the 21. Following Hargitt’s three-yard run, Frankfort’s Wade Ahlvers intercepted a pass.
On second down, Breech ran 41 yards to the West 20. Two Huerter runs gave the East a third and two. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against the West made it first and goal at the 8.
Kistler’s eight-yard touchdown catch gave the East its first lead. The PAT attempt was unsuccessful, leaving the East with an 18-16 advantage with 58 seconds left in the third.
The following kickoff pinned the West at its own nine. A Bloomfield run ended the quarter.
On third and five, Loomis’s run to the 36 gave his team a first down. On fourth and one, Pratt-Skyline’s Trent Befort ran for a first down to the East 30.
Befort and Hargitt combined for a few runs before Hargitt produced a first and goal at the nine. Two Befort runs took the ball to the one, and he completed the long drive with a touchdown run. The PAT conversion gave the West a 24-18 edge with 5:03 left in the contest.
Huerter returned the ensuing kickoff to the 12. On second and eight, Haverkamp’s 66-yard touchdown run tied the score with 4:04 remaining. Following an unsuccessful PAT try, Gfeller returned the kickoff to the 17.
Hargitt’s one-yard run on third down forced a fourth and five. The West got a first down at the 35 when the East was penalized for roughing the kicker on the punt. Hargitt ran for another first down.
He ran twice more to set up a third and six. The West regained the lead on a 28-yard touchdown reception by Loomis to Rietzke. The PAT was successful, giving the West a 32-24 lead with 1:05 left.
Huerter returned the kick to the 16. Three incomplete passes resulted in a fourth and 10. After a timeout, another incomplete pass ended the possession, sealing the win for the West.
West wins D-II game
The West squad won the Division II game, 56-32.
St. John’s-Tipton’s Garrett Greif picked up a first down with an 11-yard run to start the East’s first possession. Hanover’s Jerod Diederich had a two-yard run, but the East was unable to sustain the drive. A punt on fourth down by Derrick Gerard of Hanover went deep in West territory, and St. John's Tipton's Wessling tackled Otis-Bison’s Kevin Wissman at the one.
On second down, Wissman’s fumble was recovered in the end zone by Sylvan’s Caleb Hirsch for an East touchdown. The two-point try failed, leaving the East with a 6-0 lead.
Wallace Co.'s Taylor Pearce returned the kickoff to the 31.
Jacob Ingham of Quivira Heights followed with a 24-yard reception. After two incomplete passes by Garrett Dreiling of Victoria, Chase’s Jake Kizzar ran for three yards. An incomplete pass on fourth and long returned the ball to the East.
Diederich started the possession with an 18-yard run, followed by another first down run by Wessling to the 27.
The next first down came on a penalty against the defense. Two runs by Diederich took the ball to the four. On third and one, the four-yard touchdown run gave the East a 12-0 lead.
Wissman returned the ensuing kickoff to the 15. Ingham had a 12-yard reception. After two incomplete passes, Dreiling ran the ball for 21 yards. A five-yard offensive penalty and a fumble that was recovered for a big loss by South Barber’s Stewart Ott led to second and 32. Following an incomplete pass, Dreiling punted to Wessling, who called for a fair catch at the 15.
On the next play, Tyler Bailey of Pawnee Heights recovered the East’s fumble at the 19.
Victoria’s Brett Ottley started the West’s drive with an eight-yard run. Wissman’s nine-yard run set-up a first and goal.
Pearce followed with a one-yard touchdown run. The PAT conversion was successful, cutting the East’s lead to 12-8 in the middle of the first quarter.
A touchback on the kickoff gave the East possession at the 15. On second and 10, Diederich ran for four yards. He then gained a first down on a 16-yard run.
After a one-yard reception by Greif, two more Diederich runs produced a first down. After a seven-yard grab by Waverly’s Josh Teal, on second down, Diederich was sacked by Wissman.
The West regained possession after an incomplete pass on fourth and seven.
The second quarter started with a 51-yard touchdown reception by Ingham. The PAT try failed, leaving the West with a 14-12 lead.
Wessling returned the ensuing kickoff to the 21. Greif’s six-yard catch on second down started the East’s march down the field. He ran for seven yards to pick up a first down.
Teal had an eight-yard reception. After Wessling’s one-yard run produced a fourth and two, Diederich ran for 12 yards and a first down at the West 25.
Greif gained another first down with an 11-yard run. On second down, his 10-yard reception produced a first and goal.
Wessling’s four-yard touchdown run put the East ahead again. An unsuccessful PAT attempt left the East with and 18-16 advantage with 7:06 left in the half.
Ottley took the following kickoff and handed it to Wissman, who returned it 79 yards for a touchdown. The two-point conversion gave the West a 22-18 edge with 6:53 remaining in the quarter.
Wessling took the kickoff to the 18, where the East started its next possession. Three short runs by Wessling led to fourth and one, and Gerard’s punt was partially blocked.
The West gained possession at the East 36 and promptly scored on a 36-yard touchdown catch by Wallace County’s Tate Andrews. The PAT try failed, and the West led, 28-18, with 4:53 left in the half.
Wessling’s 10-yard kickoff return gave the East possession at the 24. After Diederich’s five-yard run, Teal had a 23-yard reception for a first down. Andrews sacked Diederich for a loss.
On second and 22, Wessling’s 42-yard touchdown grab narrowed the gap. A reception by Greif gave the East the PAT conversion to get within two.
Pearce returned the kickoff to the 28. On third and three, Ingham had a four-yard reception for a first down. Andrews followed with a 17-yard reception to the East 23.
After a four-yard catch by Ingham, South Haven’s Christian Howell returned an interception to the 12. However, the half ended after two incomplete passes, with the West leading, 28-26.
Ottley returned the kickoff to open the second half to the 30 for the West. On second down, Wissman’s 16-yard run produced a first down at the East 29. Ottley ran for six yards before Kizzar’s two-yard run set up fourth and short.
Kizzar ran four yards for a first down. On second down, Pearce’s 16-yard touchdown run extended his team’s lead. The PAT try was unsuccessful, leaving the West with a 34-26 edge.
A touchback on the kickoff gave the East the ball at the 15. Wessling’s four-yard run and Greif’s five-yard run led to a third and short. Wessling ran five yards for a first down before Greif’s 11-yard reception kept the East moving down the field.
On second down, Nolan Dreiling of Pawnee Heights sacked Diederich for a 10-yard loss. On fourth and long, Gerard punted to Wissman, who returned it 70 yards for a touchdown. The PAT attempt failed as the West led, 40-26, with under five minutes remaining in the third quarter.
After Hirsch returned the kick to the East 26, Greif’s 18-yard reception moved the ball into West territory. On third and 11, Wessling had an 11-yard catch for another first down.
Greif ran 15 yards to continue the East‘s march down the field. On third and 10, Greif had an eight-yard reception, and a personal foul penalty against the West resulted in a first and goal. On third down, Diederich ran a yard to set up fourth and goal a yard and a half from the end zone as the quarter ended.
Diederich ran for a touchdown to open the fourth. An unsuccessful PAT try left the West with a 40-32 lead.
Wissman returned the ensuing kickoff to the 31. On second down, Cunningham’s Kyle Gridley ran for four yards. His 11-yard run produced a first down. On second and short, Ingham gained another first down with an eight-yard grab.
Following an eight-yard run by Ottley, Pearce ran four yards for a touchdown, his third of the contest. The two-point conversion gave the West a 48-32 advantage with 8:48 to go.
After a touchback for the East, three incomplete passes led to a punt on fourth and 10. Wissman returned it 18 yards to the 36. On third down, Kizzar’s five-yard run produced a first down at the East 23. Pearce’s four-yard run on second down resulted in another first down.
Andrews followed with an 11-yard touchdown reception. Gridley ran for the PAT conversion to make the game the highest scoring contest in Kansas 8-Man All-Star history.
The West's, 56-32 lead would be the final score. The teams combined for 88 points to break the previous record of 86 total points set in the Division I game in 2003.
