Week one of the Kansas high school football season is in the books and already three of the state’s top-ranked teams have fallen.
In Class 4A, Topeka Hayden fell victim to penalties and turnovers in a 23-6 loss to rival Topeka Seaman. Holton now takes over the top spot in the Kpreps 4A poll after a 52-0 shutout of De Soto.
There has already been major movement in the Class 2-1A poll as the two top teams in the pre-season rankings fell in Week 1. Meade, which was ranked atop the preseason poll, committed a late turnover and fell at Holcomb, 28-27; while last week’s second-ranked team Plainville was beaten soundly by Phillipsburg, 48-18. As a result, LaCrosse is now the new top-ranked team in 2-1A followed by Stanton County at No. 2. Defending champion Centralia enters the rankings at No. 5 this week.
Baileyville B&B won the battle between the 8-Man Division’s top-ranked teams by defeating Madison 34-22. The Falcons remain atop the Division II poll this week, while Ness City takes over the top spot in 8-Man, Division I. Mankato-Rock Hills enters the top five in the Division I poll, while Waverly and Frankfort are new to the rankings in Division II.
In Class 5A, Blue Valley falls one spot to No. 3 after an 8-6 loss to the fourth ranked team in Class 6A, Gardner-Edgerton. Eastern Kansas League (EKL) rival Bishop Miege takes over the No. 2 spot in the 5A rankings, and will take on Gardner-Edgerton this week. Another EKL member enters the rankings at No. 5 as a loaded Blue Valley Southwest replaces Hays which fell 44-43 in overtime to Junction City.
The Class 6A rankings remained virtually intact except for the No. 5 spot where Manhattan replaces Wichita Heights. The Indians soundly defeated Mill Valley in Week 1, while Heights was beaten 47-16 by Bishop Carroll.
